Why are you so spiritual?
They ask her
What they’re saying is
I’m on a need to know basis
with spirituality —
Let’s unpack that word, spirituality
Spiritual reality
That’s what they say.
If it ain’t broke
Don’t look into it.

If what you’re doing is working
Why bring awareness to it?
Are you trying to jinx it?

If things are good
And they are
Your needs are met
Who are you to stir the pot?

What if I told you
Death is my Roman Empire?
Instead of seeing daily patterns
Of that ancient empire in ours
I see the void
On a nightly basis.

Since death implies life,
I live in open spirituality.

Is naming the thing
giving it power?
When you ignore it
Can’t you tangibly feel
Its absence in the plane of words
But prescence in the order of things?

When you name a dance move
A melody, a way of relating,
You gain power yet
You do kill something.

If you’ve noticed that you
And your partner
Have had coffee together
For a week straight
And it’s something you treasure
Do you bring attention to it?
Call it “our morning coffee date”?
Won’t that dim its magic?
Create an expectation
And deaden the spontaneity?

Awareness can be the needle
That pins the collector’s insects dead.
Or it can be the needle
That invigorates weak meridians.
Your intention.
Your choice.
